Divisional Charts
About this tool

Every zodiac sign spans 30°. In Vedic astrology these 30° can be divided into equal sub-segments: 2 parts for D2, 9 parts for D9, 10 parts for D10, all the way to 60 parts for D60. Each division produces a new chart focused on one specific domain of life. The D1 birth chart tells you what planetary energies you carry. The divisional charts (Vargas) tell you precisely where and how those energies manifest: in career, marriage, children, property, or spiritual practice.

The Divisional Charts: D1 Through D60 Explained

What each Varga governs · How to read them · Which require precise birth time

⚠️
Disclaimer. Divisional chart principles described here are classical reference material. Higher Vargas (D30, D40, D60) require birth time accurate to within 1 to 2 minutes for reliable results. Always use the computed charts for your specific birth data.
✦ The Principle of Division: How Vargas Work

A Varga chart is not a separate horoscope. It is the birth chart viewed through a specific analytical lens. When a planet moves just one arc-minute in D1, it can shift two or three signs in the higher Vargas. This is why divisional charts reveal information that the D1 alone cannot: a planet appearing neutral in D1 may be exalted in D10, substantially strengthening its career significations. The same planet may be debilitated in D9, undermining its marriage promise.

Classical texts recommend reading D1 and D9 together for all analysis, adding the relevant Varga (D10 for career, D7 for children, D4 for property) for domain-specific readings. Higher Vargas like D60 require birth time accurate to within two minutes to be meaningful.

The Sixteen Principal Vargas
D1
Rashi · Birth Chart

The foundation of all analysis. The complete natal chart showing overall life structure, karma, and personality. Every other Varga is read alongside D1, never in isolation.

D2
Hora · Wealth

Financial patterns and wealth accumulation. Each sign divides into two 15° Horas: the Sun Hora (first half of odd signs, second half of even signs) and the Moon Hora (the reverse). Planets in the Sun Hora are strong for earned wealth; Moon Hora for inherited or received wealth.

D3
Drekkana · Siblings

Siblings, younger relatives, courage, and short-distance travel. Each sign divides into three 10° parts. The conditions in D3 describe the nature of sibling relationships and the native's capacity for personal effort and initiative.

D4
Chaturthamsa · Property

Fixed assets, land, property, and vehicles. The primary divisional chart for questions about home ownership, property acquisition, and material possessions accumulated through life.

D7
Saptamsa · Children

Children, progeny, and creative legacy. The primary Varga for questions about children: their number, nature, timing, and wellbeing. Used alongside the 5th house of D1 and D9 for complete fertility analysis.

D9
Navamsa · Soul & Marriage

The most important divisional chart after D1. Soul purpose, marriage quality, deeper planetary dignity, and confirmation of D1 Yogas. The D9 Lagna becomes increasingly prominent after age 35. See the dedicated Navamsa tool for full detail.

D10
Dasamsa · Career

Profession, public life, status, and karma in the world. The primary Varga for career and professional analysis. The D10 Lagna lord and the 10th house of D10 directly describe the nature of one's public work and reputation.

D12
Dvadasamsa · Parents and Ancestry
DivisionEach sign divided into 12 parts of 2°30' each, one mini-zodiac per sign, beginning from the same sign and proceeding through all 12.
DomainBoth parents: their nature, health, and longevity, and inherited ancestral karma. Reveals what has been received from the family line, both materially and karmically.
What to checkThe D12 Lagna lord, the Sun (father), the Moon (mother), and the 9th and 4th houses of D12. Malefics afflicting the D12 Lagna with afflicted Sun and Moon indicates difficulty with or early separation from parents.
D16
Shodasamsa · Vehicles

Vehicles, conveyances, and happiness from material possessions. Also governs journeys and the quality of comfort derived from owned property.

D20
Vimshamsa · Spirituality

Spiritual practice, upasana (personal worship), and religious inclination. The primary Varga for spiritual analysis, used to assess the depth and nature of a person's inner life and spiritual capacity.

D24
Chaturvimshamsa · Education

Formal education, academic achievement, and the capacity for learning. Used alongside the 5th house of D1 for questions about educational success and intellectual excellence.

D60
Shashtiamsa · Past-Life Karma

The most refined and profound of all divisional charts. Each sign is divided into 60 equal parts of 0°30' each. The D60 reveals accumulated karma from past lives and its influence on the present life. Classical texts treat it as the final arbiter of planetary strength, explaining anomalies no other Varga can: why a planet appears strong in D1 and D9 but consistently fails to deliver during its Dasha, or why a seemingly weak planet produces extraordinary results.

Because each D60 division spans only 30 arc-minutes, a birth time error of two minutes shifts a planet's D60 position. Meaningful only with a confirmed, precise birth time from an official record.

⚠ Birth Time Accuracy by Varga

The precision required increases dramatically with higher Vargas. Below are the minimum accuracy thresholds for reliable Lagna positions in each group.

D1 · D3
Reliable within approximately 30 minutes. Lagna and basic placements remain stable across this margin in most cases.
D7 · D9 · D10
Reliable within approximately 10 to 15 minutes. A 15-minute error can shift the D9 Lagna in sensitive degree ranges. Always verify against known life events.
D12 · D16 · D20 · D24
Require birth time accurate to within 5 to 8 minutes for reliable Varga Lagna. Planetary sign placements may still be usable with slightly less precision.
D30 · D40 · D45
Require birth time accurate to within 2 to 3 minutes. These Vargas are sensitive enough that even a confirmed hospital time should be tested against life events.
D60
Requires birth time confirmed to within 1 to 2 minutes from an official record. D60 analysis applied to an approximate time is not meaningful and can produce actively misleading readings.
